Usefull Information

Climate & Health

Travellers originating from countries where yellow fever or polio is prevalent must ensure they have received up-to-date vaccinations against these diseases before entering Sri Lanka. While there are no other compulsory immunizations required for travelers to Sri Lanka, it is advisable to be current with vaccinations for Diphtheria, Tuberculosis, Japanese B Encephalitis, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Rabies, and Tetanus.

Dengue fever is widespread across Sri Lanka, and unfortunately, there is no vaccine available for it. Prevention primarily involves minimizing exposure to mosquito bites. Although Sri Lanka is considered a low-risk area for Malaria, it’s prudent to consult with your local general practitioner or travel clinic for personalized advice on the appropriate immunizations and preventive measures.

Currency

The official currency of Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee. To stay updated on the current exchange rates for the locations you plan to visit, you can visit the Central Bank of Sri Lanka

Cultural & Heritage

Casual Western attire is generally acceptable, except when visiting Buddhist temples, where it’s important to dress modestly, covering bare legs and upper arms. Visitors should adhere to modest clothing standards when entering any place of worship, and it’s customary to remove shoes and hats. While some temples may provide sarongs, it’s advisable to carry your own to avoid inconvenience.

During our tours, interactions with local communities are frequent, each with unique customs and traditions. Therefore, we kindly request you to be mindful and show respect towards them. Your guides will be available to offer guidance on appropriate behavior.

 Language & Religion

Sri Lanka recognizes Sinhala and Tamil as its official languages. Sinhala, an Indo-Aryan language, is predominant among the population. English is also widely spoken and comprehended. Typically, place names and signage on public transportation such as buses and trains are displayed in all three languages.

Buddhism holds the primary religious affiliation in Sri Lanka, with its official introduction dating back to the 3rd century B.C. during the reign of King Devanam Piyatissa. The venerable Mahinda, son of Emperor Asoka of India, is credited with this historic introduction.

Food and drink

Sri Lankan cuisine is hot and spicy. The staple food of Sri Lankans is rice, which is prepared with curry both veg, and fish based. All the dishes are cooked on the base of coconut milk and flavoured with liberal use of spices. Like all the people of coastal regions, the Sri Lankans are experts in preparing fish dishes.

Mallung, Sambol, Lamprais, Buriyani and Polos Pehi are popular dishes of Sri Lanka. Sri Lankans also like several juicy sweetmeats like Kavum, Halape, Thalaguli and Wattalapam. It is probably one of the world’s oldest representations of vegetarian food and is traditionally served on a banana leaf.
